Today, June 5th there will be a celestial event that will not happen again for over 100 years.  The planet Venus will be visible as it passes across the face of the Sun.  The transit will begin at 3:09 PM and continue for about 7 hours.  To view it safely, you will need a #14 welder’s glass (the darkest kind – for arc welding) OR you could come to the Cincinnati Observatory.  The Observatory is hosting a viewing of the event from 6:00 – 8:30.  They ask for a 4$ per person donation.  Their address is 3489 Observatory Place 45208.  This is very close to us!  See you there!

Congratulations to the 7th and 8th grade Power of the Pen teams who competed at Wooster College on Friday.  Lindsey Imhoff, Grace Haffner, Cohen Bailey, Natalie Popowics, Eli Koreman, Mollie Coates, and Lauren Getgey competed against 275 schools from Ohio.   Ellie Kapcar won 3rd best 7th grader in the star of Ohio while Natalie Popowics took home a 15th place out of 350 writers!  Grace Haffner also went to the final power round.  As a team, Mariemont Junior High placed 5th in the state of Ohio!  We are very proud of our writers!  Please see Mrs. Jordan for your final pieces.

There will be a Varsity Cross Country meeting for all HS and next year's freshman in the commons/cafeteria at 3:00 TODAY.  The meeting will last about 15-20 minutes with Coach Timmers going over expectations for the summer as well the season!

A Summer Lacrosse Leadership Camp is being offered at Kusel Stadium in July for incoming 7th & 8th grade girls.  The camp will teach both lacrosse skills and character building techniques to help girls become leaders both on and off the field.  Flyers and registration forms are in the office.

Students who have completed 5 hours of community service this school year and were not recognized at the February Awards Ceremony, need to turn in their hours to Mrs. Parr TODAY in order to be recognized at the awards ceremony at the end of the school year.

Dale Park / Mariemont Jr High Building Tribute will take place TONIGHT, May 24 beginning at 4:30.  The community is invited to walk through halls and classrooms to learn about the many ways our building has served the school district and community.  Highlights of the evening will be student performances, slideshow, Dale Park history timeline, along with memorabilia stations throughout the building.  After touring the building, enjoy music and songs performed by our orchestra, band and chorus students beginning at 7:00.

Kultures Konnect Fact of the Day: In Kenya, more than 60 different languages are spoken and there are more than 30 ethnic groups. Almost everyone in the country speaks more than one language.   If you went to school at Faith Hope Elementary in Kenya, by the time you are in the third grade you would be able to write and speak in three languages Swahili (the national language), Kikuyu (tribal language), and English in order to compete with the global world (language that all state tests are given in).   Ms. Monterosso was only able to teach grades 3-6 when visiting so that the children would be able to understand and learn from her English.

Congratulations to the Power of the Pen teams!  They did an amazing job this weekend at Princeton! The seventh grade team came in first place.  Lindsey Imhoff came in 11th place and Ellie Kapcar came in FIRST place overall.  The eighth grade team came in 4th place overall.  Mollie Coates finished in 11th, Lauren Getgey in 5th, and Natalie Popowics had a best of round.  Overall, both 7th and 8th grade teams came in 2nd place out of 40 teams!  We will meet Tuesday at lunch.  CONGRATS!

Do you know what a blood cancer is? It’s a certain disease that occurs in the blood. Our blood is made up of three types of cells: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. A blood cancer crowds out the healthy blood cells so they can’t do their jobs. Today, Mariemont Junior High joins more than 25,000 schools nationwide in The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients program.  For the next three weeks we will be helping people who are sick with blood cancers like leukemia.  Please bring your donations to your homeroom teacher.  The top fundraising homeroom will receive a pizza party.

Please help feed the needy this holiday season!  There will be a canned food drive beginning Monday, November 28 – Wednesday, December 7.    Food will be counted in your homeroom, and the homeroom with the most food donated will win a pizza party.  Refer to the flyers in the hallway to see what is needed.

Volunteers are needed to make luminaries for the Mariemont Tree Lighting Ceremony on Sat. Dec. 3rd from 3:45-5 pm. See Mrs. Parr to sign up.
