Mr. Fjord enlisted in the V12 program at Depauw University.  He attended Midshipman School at Northwestern University.  After that, he was sent to the San Francisco Naval Base for one month and then to New Guinea.  He was an assistant gunnery officer on the LST 59.  From there he went to Mindanao in the Phillippines to pick up troops and unload them for the invasion.  He spent time in Australia, Okinawa, and the Admiralty Islands.  He achieved the rank of Lieutenant JG.
